Singapore's 2026 Job Scene For Us Old Birds Means Staying Put Is Safe But Searching Is Tough
Explore the 2026 job landscape for mature Singaporeans: rising retirement ages, AI challenges, and juicy SkillsFuture upskilling perks for all.

Eh friend, come, let’s drink kopi first. ☕ You also feel it or not? It’s already 2026, and suddenly our Singapore is a “super-aged” society. For those of us hitting the big 4-0 or 5-0, it’s a bit of a funny time. On one hand, we are the “old birds” with all the experience, but on the other hand, everything is moving so fast with all this AI talk that sometimes we feel like dinosaurs waiting for the meteor. Let me share my subjective feel about what’s actually happening out there for us.
If You Have A Chair, Just Sit Tight
Actually, if you already have a stable job and a boss who isn’t a headache, you are quite “steady pom pi pi.” The gahmen has made it much harder for companies to just anyhow ask us to pack up once we hit a certain age. Since July this year, they basically told bosses that we can work until 64, and if we are still healthy and productive, they must offer to let us stay until 69.
My view? This is a real lifesaver. Most of my friends who want to stay on are getting their contracts renewed quite easily—more than 90% of them, actually! It gives us that bit of “face” and security so we don’t have to worry about our rice bowl being taken away just because we got more white hair now.
Looking For A New Rice Bowl Is A Bit Jialat
But wah, if you are the one looking for a new job now, then the story is totally different. It’s like the market has two different speeds. Finding a new boss after 40 or 50 is honestly quite jialat (troublesome).
First off, AI is everywhere. Almost every company is using it, and if your skill is just “managing people” or doing coordination work, you might find that a computer can do it faster. Then there’s the “salary gap.” We expect a certain pay to pay for our kids’ tuition and our flat, but bosses are sweating because they have to pay more CPF for us older workers now. I’ve heard many hiring managers complain that our “expectations are too high,” but hello, everything in Singapore also getting expensive, right? And if you’ve been out of the game for more than two years, the market looks at you like you’re from the Stone Age.
The Gahmen “Lobang” For A Free Reboot
Don’t say I never share “lobang” (good deals) with you. The gahmen knows we are stressed, so they are basically paying us to not become dinosaurs. With that SkillsFuture Level-Up thingy, we get a nice $4,000 top-up.
The best part that started in March this year? You can get a bit of “pocket money” even if you study part-time while still working. Last time, you had to quit your job to get the allowance, which was super “sian” because who can afford no salary for months? Now, you can keep your job and get $300 a month just for upskilling part-time. If you really want to jump ship and go full-time, they can even give you up to $3,000. It’s a good chance to “re-fry” our skills.
Don’t Be A Stubborn Old Bird 🦖
My honest take? We cannot be “blur like sotong” and just hope things go back to how they were. The 2026 market doesn’t care how many years you’ve been in the office if you don’t know how to use the new tools.
We have the “old bird” wisdom and crisis management skills that the Gen Z kids don’t have, but we must be willing to learn the high-tech stuff. If we can combine our experience with a bit of AI knowledge, we will be invincible! 🦁 So, stay kiasu, keep upskilling, and let’s all work safely towards that age 69 goal together. Huat ah! 🚀
